What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis has long been associated with entertainment and making you do actions you would rather not, at the butt of others’ laughter. However, Hypnosis has been a part of your life already. Have you ever been driving down the road and you arrive at your destination, and you realise you don’t remember how you drove there? Everything we learn is stored in our sub-conscious and when we are driving along, you may be engrossed in other thoughts, your sub-conscious, where the learned information sits, can and sometimes takes over.
How does Hypnotherapy Work?
Hypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and therapy. Hypnosis is the process of inducing a trance like state and therapy is how the therapist starts to understand the reasons for why you are behaving the way you do, and then changing the way you think and behave in our relation to the situations you are focused on changing. Under Hypnosis, you are in a trance like state – very relaxed and calm. In fact, we can be in a trance in daily life when carrying out a repetitive task or reading a book for example.
A series of Hypnotherapy sessions is a professional relationship between the therapist and the client, the client has work to do too, and together we work to change the way you feel towards your challenging issue. With Hypnotherapy, we can’t make guarantees but as a client coming for Hypnotherapy, if you are genuinely open to change, you want the change to happen and are flexible in working on yourself to help facilitate the change, hypnotherapy can be suitable for your desired outcome.
In day-to-day life, we think with our rational, conscious mind and are aware of ourselves and our thoughts. When you are hypnotised into a trance-Like state, the sub-conscious mind can be accessed. This is the part of our mind which controls our habits and irrational thoughts. For example: smoking, eating issues, self-confidence, stress, anxiety, pain, phobias, and fears. For a Hypnotherapy session, I will relax your mind and body by taking you through a muscle relaxing exercise, focusing on your breathing, and then deepen that relaxation with various techniques, leading you to a wonderfully relaxed state in your safe place and make suggestions to your sub-conscious mind to change your thoughts and habits, whilst your mind is in a state to be openly receptive. Over a number of sessions, we build on the therapy and the suggestions, empowering you to the change your desire. You also have a recording of the session to listen to throughout the week, between sessions, and other tools to use to support your change. Like any therapy, the more you follow the procedures and use the tools, the more your desired outcome can happen, as long as you stay open and receptive. At all times, you are in complete control and can decide to come out of hypnosis whenever you desire.
Hypnotherapy is a suitable therapy for many people and a very relaxing experience.
